Flyby news story:

Though most of her romance has taken form in period dramas like Pride & Prejudice or even period action adventures like the first three Pirates of the Caribbean films, the lovely Keira Knightley is joining us in contemporary society with Seeking a Friend for the End of the World with Steve Carell. In addition, it sounds like she’s taking on another modern romance in the form of Lasse Hallström’s adaptation of Nicholas Sparks’ novel Safe Haven. Twitch says the actress is in early talks to take on the film which doesn’t sound like it’s the usual sort of estranged and sappy romance we’re used to getting from Sparks.

Here’s the official synopsis of the book:

When a mysterious young woman named Katie appears in the small North Carolina town of Southport, her sudden arrival raises questions about her past. Beautiful yet self-effacing, Katie seems determined to avoid forming personal ties until a series of events draws her into two reluctant relationships: one with Alex, a widowed store owner with a kind heart and two young children; and another with her plainspoken single neighbor, Jo. Despite her reservations, Katie slowly begins to let down her guard, putting down roots in the close-knit community and becoming increasingly attached to Alex and his family.

But even as Katie begins to fall in love, she struggles with the dark secret that still haunts and terrifies her . . . a past that set her on a fearful, shattering journey across the country, to the sheltered oasis of Southport. With Jo’s empathic and stubborn support, Katie eventually realizes that she must choose between a life of transient safety and one of riskier rewards . . . and that in the darkest hour, love is the only true safe haven.

Sounds like it could be pretty decent. Adaptations of Sparks’ novels have become a genre unto themselves with films like The Notebook, Dear John, A Walk to Remember and the forthcoming release of The Lucky One with Zac Efron. Even the marketing for The Vow needed to point out that it starred Rachel McAdams “from The Notebook” and Channing Tatum “from Dear John,” and the film felt like it could’ve easily been a Sparks book. Anyway, with Hallström (What’s Eating Gilbert Grape) at the helm, I’m anxious to see what he does with Sparks’ material and hope it falls outside of the usual cheesy kind of drama.

It’s hard to believe Keira has body image problems:

Keira Knightley may soon find her Safe Haven (oh my, how bad was that?), but the actress best known for her roles in hits like Pirates of the Caribbean, Atonement, and Pride & Prejudice apparently doesn’t feel as safe as some of us might expect.

Well, regarding her appearance, that is.

Although Knightley has appeared on lists like FHM‘s “100 Sexiest Women In The World” and Maxim‘s “Hot 100,” the actress tells Vogue that she doesn’t see herself as glamorous or even attractive.

Actually, she’s self-conscious about her body image and blames her career for her anxiety:

It’s the superficial thing of seeing your flaws on the screen. That’s probably going to be all that you see and you focus on the bits you don’t particularly like [...] I’m incredibly self-conscious about a lot of parts of it but, equally, I’m aware that it works in certain environments. If you are using your face, if you’re selling it then you become so aware of the flaws because people tell you. And they do so brusquely. So then you start seeing it.

Even though Knightley claims she’s found a way to cope with her “own body anxiety issues so it doesn’t get in the way of telling the story,” she does admit the anxiety leaks into her personal life, too:

I was on the beach the other day in France on holiday with some friends and we were all lying out. They were all totally fine taking everything off and I was sitting around in my jeans and a top. I kind of didn’t want to take anything off.

Some of you may feel you can’t relate to Knightley’s issues; after all, she’s stunning, rich, and famous, and the body she has issues with might be the very body you’re trying to obtain. However, we ALL deal with these kinds of issues (from time to time, or a lot), no matter who we are.

Tell me about a time when YOU dealt with body image issues and appearance anxiety? What caused the stress, and how did you handle it?

David Cronenberg, Roman Polanski, Lynne Ramsay, Michael Fassbender, Jodie Foster, Keira Knightley, Viggo Mortensen, John C. Reilly, Tilda Swinton, Christoph Waltz and Kate Winslet will all be part of the Spring Film Series presented by the Comox Valley Art Gallery and the Toronto International Film Festival Film Circuit.

Films for the Spring Film Series are:

• Carnage: April 1. Director: Roman Polanski. Cast: Jodie Foster, Kate Winslet, John C. Reilly, Christoph Waltz. Year: 2011. Run Time: 80 mins. Country: USA. Language: English. Rated: R. Genre: Drama, Comedy.

Adapted from Yasmina Reza’s 2009 Tony-winning play God of Carnage, and featuring a top-notch cast of Jodie Foster (The Beaver, The Brave One), Kate Winslet (Revolutionary Road, The Reader), John C. Reilly (Cyrus, and the upcoming We Need To Talk About Kevin) and Christoph Waltz (Water for Elephants, Inglourious Basterds,), Carnage is a captivating and explosively comic study in the tension between civilized surface and savage instinct.

• A Dangerous Method: April 15. Director: David Cronenberg. Cast: Viggo Mortensen, Michael Fassbender, Keira Knightley. Year: 2011. Runtime: 93 mins. Country: Germany/Canada. Language: English. Rated: R. Genre: Mystery & Suspense, Drama.

Sharp-witted dialogue and a pristine setting add a refined tone to a film that explores the anything but civilized depths of human desire. Set in Vienna on the eve of the First World War, the film explores the complex relationship between novice psychiatrist Carl Jung (Michael Fassbender, Jane Eyre, Inglourious Basterds) and his mentor Sigmund Freud (Viggo Mortensen, The Road, Eastern Promises).

• We Need To Talk About Kevin: April 29. Director: Lynne Ramsay. Cast: Tilda Swinton, John C. Reilly, Ezra Miller. Year: 2011. Runtime: 112 mins. Country: U.K., USA. Language: English. Rated: R. Genre: Mystery & Suspense, Drama.

A suspenseful and gripping psychological thriller, Lynne Ramsay’s We Need to Talk About Kevin explores the factious relationship between a mother and her son. Tilda Swinton, in a bracing, tour-de-force performance, plays the mother, Eva, as she contends for 15 years with the increasing malevolence of her first-born child, Kevin (Ezra Miller). Based on the best-selling novel of the same name, We Need to Talk About Kevin explores nature v.s. nurture on a whole new level as Eva’s own culpability is measured against Kevin’s innate evilness.

Film tickets are $11 each, available at The CVAG Gift Shop, 580 Duncan Ave. in downtown Courtenay and Videos N More, 264 Anderton Road in Comox. If the films do not sell out, tickets will also be available in the Rialto Theatre lobby before the film — cash only, exact change appreciated.

All films are at the Rialto Theatre on Sundays at 5 p.m. and are fundraisers for the Comox Valley Art Gallery. For updates and more information on the films, visit www.comoxvalleyartgallery.com or call 250-338-6211.

Also making the list in the talent category is Sky News correspondent Alex Crawford, the latest James Bond girl Naomie Harris, comedian and tv writer Miranda Hart, TV presenter, writer and comedian Sue Perkins and TV journalist and presenter Kirsty Wark.

Emma Watson, best known for playing Hermione Granger in the Harry Potter movies, and recently cast to star in Sofia Coppola’s latest pictureThe Bling Ring, is arguably one of the few glaring omissions from a list of the top 50 most powerful British women working in film and television.
